'Oranges are not the only fruit' Book Cover Design

Second year project Book Cover Design for 'Oranges are not the only fruit' by Jeanette Wintersen

Brief
Design a book cover for 'Oranges are not the only fruit' by Jeanette Wintersen

Concept/Solution
The recurring theme of the orange in the story symbolises heterosexuality.
The main character Jeanette has been brought up by her mother who desires her to be a missionary. However, when Jeanette gets older and begins to experience life outside of the church and her home, she begins to question her beliefs and sexuality as she starts to fall in love with a woman.
As one of the main settings for the story is the church, I decided to illustrate a stained glass window. However if you look closely, the pattern is made of up the female gender symbols interconnecting, which represents Jeanettes homosexuality, and the books concept of oranges (heterosexuality) not being the only fruit (sexual orientation). The typography is also inspired by the style used for stain glass windows in churches.
